Image Submission Guidelines
All images must have been captured since 1st January 2023.
We recommend giving images titles – titles will appear on certificates and are made available to the judges.
Round 1 – Digital Images
Files should be uploaded as sRGB JPEGs.
Files should be submitted at least 4000px on the longest side (but they don’t need to be significantly bigger)
Your file name must be under 32 characters and must not contain any symbols.
Borders, keylines, watermarks or identifying information must not be added (and will result in disqualification).
Please do not strip copyright and date EXIF (where possible we will aim to preserve the embedded info) and we do require to validate the image has been shot since 1st January 2023.
Round 2 – Print
The top-15 finalists in each category will be invited to submit prints for the second round of judging. Failure to deliver the original files or a print for judging will result in disqualification.
Prints should be mounted, overall size not to exceed 20”x16”.
Unmounted prints will be rejected.
For overseas entrants (or anyone who doesn’t make their own prints), competition prints can be ordered from Digitalab and Loxley Colour.
Judging & Scoring Process
- Gold (91 – 100): This top-tier award signifies exceptional professional skill, creativity, and innovation. Images scoring within this range are outstanding in every aspect, showcasing a superior understanding of photographic techniques, composition, and impact. They represent a standard that goes beyond professional excellence, often setting new benchmarks in the industry.
- Silver Award (85 – 91): Images that achieve a Silver Award demonstrate high professional competency and artistic flair. Scoring in this band indicates that the work is of excellent quality, with impressive technical skills and creative thinking. These images stand out for their strong visual impact and precise execution.
- Bronze (80 – 85): The Bronze Award is given to images that reflect an excellent professional photographic skill and creativity standard. These images are well-executed, displaying a solid understanding of photographic principles and an ability to apply them effectively.
- Commended (78 – 79): This scoring band is for images recognised for their quality and professionalism but do not quite reach the award-winning standard. These photographs show good skill and competence, with several elements executed well.
Images are scored to our judging standards, not relative to each other.
Eligibility
The competition is open to photographers worldwide (there is no requirement to be a member of the BIPP).
Exclusions:
- The BIPP Chair of Qualifications and Awards, members of the judging team and employees of the BIPP may not enter the competition.
- Images from workshops, organised portfolio builder events and similar may not be used in the competition, either by the participant or by the instructor even if both parties were not together at the time of capture.
- Any given image may only be entered in a single category. This includes any variants of a single base image (e.g. colour and monochrome).
AI Exclusions
All imagery is expected to be the work of the photographer. Prompt-generated imagery and elements are not permitted.
However, AI tools are increasingly common in modern post-processing workflows and, pragmatically, we are not excluding their use. The use of Adobe Lightroom, Imagen, Evoto, Topaz AI tools, etc. (not an exhaustive list) in post-production are perfectly acceptable.
Use of Photoshop’s generative tools presents more of a challenge in terms of rules. Adding new images elements using generative tools is not acceptable, but using the same tools to remove elements (which would have been possible using traditional tools) is permitted.
The raw files of all finalist entries will be examined for compliance. Finalist entries which do not comply with the rules will be disqualified. Failure to provide the appropriate files for the deadline will result in disqualification.
